Every Speech Language Pathologist knows that no two days in the job are exactly the same, and each one comes with its own surprises and sometimes its own challenges. So, when you’re packing a bag for the day, it can be difficult to know what to bring and what to leave behind. But by following these tips from the experts at Spotter Staffing, you can always have a bag that is packed and prepared with essentials – and some fun, too!
What Five Things Does Every Speech Language Pathologist Need in Their School Bag?
- Dry Erase Sleeves and Markers – There isn’t always time to laminate every sheet, and when you have multiple students performing the same exercises or activities, it can be much more cost and time-effective to use dry-erase sleeves. Keeping dry-erase markers on hand, too, so there is always something for your students to write or draw with.
- Data Tracking Sheets – Because organization is so vital to any session, data sheets are essential for keeping your notes and information sorted. Having organized data tracking sheets also makes it easier to reference and understand your notes and data after a completed session, when you are writing progress notes or reviewing a student’s progress.
- Tongue Depressors and Latex Gloves – In order to be prepared for oral mech exams, you will need to keep tongue depressors and latex gloves on hand. Since these exams happen so frequently in a school setting, they should be kept as an everyday item.
- A Mirror or Compact – To perform an oral mech exam, or when working on articulation placement, a mirror is helpful for students to look into. Keeping a small portable mirror or a compact in your bag can help if/when your classroom doesn’t have a permanent or accessible mirror in place.
- A Daily Planner – Having a daily planner is essential as an in-school SLP. With the amount of IEP meetings, report card pickup meetings, and everyday tasks to accomplish, you will need all the help you can get to stay organized. A daily planner is an absolute must for your SLP bag.
