Surviving and Thriving in the Winter: Fun Ideas for Social Workers in Cold Weather

November 1, 2024

Winter brings a unique set of challenges and opportunities for school social workers. As temperatures drop and days get shorter, it’s easy to feel the “winter blues” set in. But with a little planning, you can make the most of the season, creating meaningful connections and fun moments  with your students.

If you want some some fun, practical ideas to help you thrive during winter months while keeping your students engaged, check out these ideas from Spotter Staffing.

1. Get Creative Indoors With Winter-Themed Activities

When outside recess isn’t an option, bring the winter spirit indoors! Craft projects, such as paper snowflakes or winter-themed coloring pages, are both therapeutic and engaging. Try incorporating mindfulness techniques into the activities, like focusing on deep breathing while crafting. You could even host a “hot cocoa and chat” session, where students can sip warm drinks while talking about their week. These cozy activities create a safe space for students to learn.

2. Host a “Winter Wellness” Challenge

A little friendly competition can make wellness fun. Launch a “Winter Wellness” challenge where students and staff participate in daily mental and physical wellness activities. Examples include gratitude journaling, stretching exercises, or acts of kindness. At the end of the month, you can recognize participants with certificates or small rewards. This not only encourages self-care but also strengthens the sense of community between students and staff.

3. Engage in “Seasonal Sharing”

Winter holidays bring the opportunity to learn about and celebrate diverse traditions. Invite students to share their cultural winter celebrations or family traditions through stories, artwork, or presentations. This can be a great opportunity to foster inclusivity and understanding. Consider creating a bulletin board that showcases students’ contributions, which helps everyone learn something new and feel represented.

4. Take Care of Yourself!

Don’t forget: your well-being matters too. Spend a few minutes outside each day for a boost of fresh air, or schedule a weekly “winter wellness walk” with colleagues. Remember, taking time to recharge keeps you energized and ready to support your students. And if your current position is causing you more stress than it should, consider working with Spotter Staffing to find an opportunity where you can thrive – not just survive – all year long.
