Plan These Five Fun Activities for Your SLP Students

July 21, 2023

Even during the summer months, there are lots of opportunities to learn and plan activities for your students. And as an amazing speech-language pathologist, you know there are plenty of engaging activities you can do with students in school that will help them promote their speech and language development and work towards their goals.

If you are planning lessons for your SLP students, check out these five fun activities:

1. Storytelling and Role-Playing

When you use games to encourage students to create their own stories or adapt existing ones, you can help them learn to act out stories using their own words and emotions. Whether you provide them with props or puppets, or just encourage creativity, this activity helps develop both language skills and social interaction.

2. Articulation Games

Try engaging students in articulation games that focus on specific speech sounds. For example, play “I Spy” or “Simon Says” with a focus on the target sound the student is searching for. You can also use flashcards or a board game to make the activity more fun!

3. Collaborative Projects

Planning group projects that require students to communicate and work together can be a lot of fun in your SLP classroom. For instance, assigning a topic and having them create a presentation or a poster can foster teamwork, language expression, and problem-solving skills – while also building comradery and social bonds.

4. Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt

Creating a scavenger hunt where students can search for objects or pictures related to specific vocabulary words can be a very fun activity in your classroom. These sorts of games and exercises promote active engagement, word retrieval, and vocabulary expansion – what’s more fun than that?

5. Language-Based Board Games

Incorporating language skills into traditional board games such as “Guess Who?” or “Scrabble” can be an entertaining classroom activity. Modifying the rules or adding language prompts can also help to encourage communication, critical thinking, and word formation.

Remember, any of these activities can be adapted to meet the needs and goals of each student!
