As an OT or COTA in this district, you will be a vital member of the special education team, delivering occupational therapy services to students with disabilities in the school setting. You will work under the supervision (for the COTA role) of a licensed OT and collaborate closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, campus special ed staff and families to support student access, participation and independence in school routines and the curriculum.
Provide direct and indirect occupational therapy services to students eligible for special education in accordance with each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Assess, plan, implement and monitor intervention strategies in areas such as fine motor skills, visual?motor integration, sensory processing, activities of daily living (ADLs) in the school context, adaptive equipment or seating/positioning, and transitioning skills.
Adapt classroom, school-environment and student materials to enable student participation in the least restrictive environment.
Consult with and support teachers, paraprofessionals, administration, families and other service providers to integrate OT strategies into the classroom and daily activities.
Document student performance, progress toward goals and services delivered; maintain accurate and timely records per district, state, and agency requirements.
Participate in IEP/ARD meetings, screening and referral processes, collaborate with the occupational therapist (for COTA) or lead (for OT) and integrate services with other related support services (e.g., speech, PT, special ed).
Stay current on best practices for school-based occupational therapy, pediatric development, special education law/regulations (IDEA, etc.), and adapt services accordingly.
Use professional discretion, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical/licensure standards.
Travel across district campuses as assigned (may include multiple school sites).
Attend required staff development, training, and planning meetings.
For OT (Occupational Therapist):
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an AOTA-accredited program (or as required by Texas)
Current Texas licensure/certification as an Occupational Therapist
Experience (preferred) working in K-12 school special education settings or pediatric therapy
Knowledge of special education processes, IEP/ARD, school accommodations and inclusive practices
Strong communication and collaboration skills
For COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant):
Associate (or required) degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant program, from an accredited institution
Current Texas licensure/certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant
Must work under supervision of licensed OT as required by Texas board rules
Prefer experience in educational or pediatric settings
Familiar with school special education environment, IEPs/ARDs, sensory/motor interventions
General Requirements (both roles):
Must pass criminal history/fingerprint check as required for school employment
Ability to travel between district campuses and navigate school environments
Physical ability to provide interventions (may include lifting equipment, assisting students with movement, working on floor level, etc.)
Effective use of technology for documentation, scheduling, and reporting
Hours: Full time (40 hours) or part time would be considered
Compensation: 45-50 dollars per hour based on experience and uncapped bonus potential.
