School Counselor (High School)
Start Date: January 5, 2026
Schedule: Full-time | 4 days on-site, 1 day remote
Pay: Up to $52/hour
Caseload: Approximately 100 students

About the Role
The Spotter Lake County team is seeking a School Counselor to support high school students’ academic progress, social-emotional development, behavior, and attendance. This role does not include college advising. The ideal candidate is proactive, consistent, and skilled at building relationships with students, staff, and families while managing a focused caseload.

Key Responsibilities
Academic Support
– Monitor grades, attendance, course progress, and missing work for ~100 students.
– Identify at-risk students and create intervention plans.
– Collaborate weekly with teachers to review student concerns and coordinate supports.
– Assist with schedule adjustments and ensure students meet graduation requirements.
– Implement and track academic contracts or progress plans.
Social–Emotional Counseling
– Provide short-term, solution-focused individual counseling for stress, anxiety, peer issues, motivation, or family-related concerns.
– Facilitate small groups on emotional regulation, social skills, or stress management.
– Respond to crises, provide stabilization, and conduct risk assessments following school protocol.
– Develop safety plans when needed and coordinate outside referrals.
Behavior & Attendance
– Track attendance data and address patterns of absenteeism.
– Meet with students and families to support consistent attendance.
– Collaborate with deans and staff on Tier II behavioral supports such as check-ins, behavior plans, and restorative conversations.
– Participate in MTSS meetings and document interventions.
Family & Community Communication
– Maintain consistent communication with parents regarding academic, behavioral, and SEL updates.
– Connect families to school and community resources.
– Participate in parent meetings, re-entry meetings, and conferences.
Special Education Collaboration (as needed)
– Participate in IEP meetings and provide SEL and behavioral input.
– Support implementation and progress monitoring of BIPs.
– Coordinate with case managers on student accommodations.
Schoolwide Involvement
– Support SEL programming, prevention initiatives, and classroom workshops.
– Contribute to PBIS/MTSS systems and school culture efforts.
– Attend professional development and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Documentation
– Maintain accurate records of counseling sessions, interventions, and follow-ups.
– Track student progress and prepare weekly summaries for the counseling or MTSS team.
– Enter data into the school’s student information or case-management system.
Qualifications
– Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field.
– Active Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Counselor endorsement in Illinois (or eligible).
– Experience working with high school students preferred.
– Strong communication, organizational, and crisis-response skills.
