Position Overview

We are seeking a Self-Contained Special Education Teacher for a 4th/5th grade classroom of 11 students with Down syndrome and/or intellectual disabilities. This classroom does not present the significant/aggressive behaviors typical of many self-contained settings — this is a calmer, academically-focused environment with strong support in place.

Classroom Structure

  • 11 students, 4th and 5th grade
  • Students typically perform 3–4 grade levels below academic age
  • 3:1 student-to-staff ratio
  • Paraprofessional support included, including one para returning from last year with these students
  • All students push into general education classrooms, freeing up dedicated planning time for the teacher
  • Curriculum: STAR and Unique Learning System

Behavior Profile

  • No biting, eloping, or hitting
  • Expected behaviors are limited to occasional crying or work refusal
  • Significantly lower behavioral intensity than a typical self-contained classroom

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction using the STAR and Unique curricula, differentiated to each student's level
  • Set and hold a high academic standard while meeting students where they currently are
  • Coordinate push-in schedules and goals with general education teachers
  • Direct and collaborate with paraprofessional support to maximize the 3:1 ratio
  • Write and progress-monitor IEP goals; lead as primary case manager
  • Communicate regularly with parents — more frequent/detailed updates are often needed since students may not always self-report effectively
  • Maintain classroom data, documentation, and compliance records

Requirements

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 endorsement
  • Experience with intellectual disabilities and/or Down syndrome populations preferred
  • Comfortable directing paraprofessional staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for frequent parent contact
  • Hard-working, hands-on teaching style with high expectations for student growth

What Sets a Strong Candidate Apart

  • Holds high academic expectations without losing sight of where each student currently performs
  • Experience with STAR and/or Unique Learning System curricula
  • Comfortable leading a team (paras) rather than working solo
  • Proactive, detailed communicator with parents
